The best wire I have found for fixing broken tracks is enamelled copper
wire that is used for winding transformers or chokes. You melt the
varnish off by applying heat with the soldering iron and the result is a
very neat job with no risk of shorts.

There are good and bad solder wicks around. Some do not have enough (or
any?) flux in them and can be difficult to wick solder with. If you are
having trouble then that is probably why. A quality wick will work well
and is a good way to get solder off this type of early resin board. The
Goot brand seems ok.
