What are the classics I've missed out on? ***early electro classics: Cybotron (Juan Atkins and Rick Davis): "Cosmic Cars" (1982), "Clear" (1983), Afrika Bambaata (sp) and the Soul Sonic Force came out after "Cosmic Cars", though AB and the SSF are miscredited as producing the first electro; from them, check "Planet Rock", "Looking For The Perfect Beat" and others; check early productions from John Robie and Arthur Baker (the best thing that ever happened to New Order); Dynamix II "Give The DJ A Break", etc; you want 82-85ish; then freestyle started to appear, booty stuff like Luke, 2 Live Crew, etc; re: newer stuff: Detroit is still the key, IMO (Florida's "electro" is really funky breaks; what you seem to be reading/hearing is electro is probably breaks or bigbeat (Chemical Brothers/etc-ish): Detroit's Drexciya/Dopplereffekt/Elecktroids, Ectomorph (from Ann Arbor), Aux 88, Model 500 (that Atkins guy again!), plenty more (tired...must sleep; this should help get you started), a lot of incredible bands from the Netherlands and Germany as well; I-F, Anthony Rother, etc; again, this is just a start re: new Mantronik album; I love the early Mantronik too, and even dealt with "Got To Have Your Love" and Bryce Luvah's horrid misogynist raps, but his new one, with Traylude rapping, is closer to the bigbeat anger of the Prodigy than Electro (or anything else for that matter); in fact, the only electroish track on "I Sing The Body Electro" is "Original Electro"--and that's a Kraftwerk cutup; BTW, you'll want Kraftwerk too: "Tour De France", "Numbers", etc. Hope this gets you started.
