My particular arrangement allows 34 analog inputs, or up to 46 channels =
if I have some digital AES3 equipment like the Sony DAT recorder.

Originally, the MIO firmware was arranged like a patch bay, with all =
kinds of effects available, and virtual patch cables. But they =
eventually restructured MIO Console to look more like a mixer, where you =
use inserts for effects and don=E2=80=99t really =E2=80=9Cpatch=E2=80=9D =
anything. Instead of patching, you build a mixer by adding strips that =
are mono, stereo, quad, surround (anything from 1 to 8 channels), =
busses, and master outputs. Each mixer strip gets a group of inputs, and =
each master bus connects to a group of outputs. There is also an =
optional concept of a Monitor Controller that makes some things easier.

I bought the ULN-2 in June of 2008. Added a second-hand 2882 in =
September for a year-long installation. Upgraded the ULN-2 with 2D in =
2010. These both support up to 96 kHz sampling. I then purchased the =
LIO-8 in 2014 for rare 192 kHz sampling needs. These interfaces have all =
been rock solid for a decade so far, and I expect them to last forever.

The hardware is so flexible that you can use it for live location =
recording, in a recording studio, you can also do full FOH and monitor =
mixes in a venue with tons of on-board effects, and the converters are =
high-quality enough for a mastering studio. I think you can see why they =
spend some time in a portable rack.

p.s. At the moment, you need a FireWire-capable Mac, but the 3D upgrade =
will be adding USB and ethernet interfacing. Large channel counts might =
require a second FireWire port that doesn=E2=80=99t share bandwidth with =
the first. The 3D solution will not have the bandwidth limitations of =
FireWire. FireWire can handle at least 40 channels in both directions, =
but not more than about 54 channels.
