I recommend buying a PZM microphone from radio shack and just using either
your computer or a tape deck to record the sound.  suspend the mic out the
window facing the train station and attach the wind-breaking foam decal to
the mic to reduce the rumble of wind on the mic.  These mics are about $59
and pretty unbeatable pricewise for ambient field recordings.
