{David Kristian: National Kid/Oysterpoint [discreet/indiscreet creet006]}
Just when you thought that Canada's David Kristian (who also records for
alien8, suction, drop beat, etc.) had fully left his beat driven side
behind in favor of his experimental analog workouts, which were
exemplified on his most recent album, _Cricklewood_ (alien8), he comes at
us with this two tracker (The predecessor to his upcoming Discreet full
length, _from the valley of the modular_ [another one already?]) of some
of the most melodic drum n' bass ever. 'National Kid' opens up sounding
somewhat reminicent to some of the material on funkstorung's
"funkenstort" ep, with it's moving melody (VERY musik aus strom-ish), but
it slowly morphs into something original and deeply moving. With echoing
synth lines, water droplets, and droney strings. Flip it over to the
disturbingly odd 'oysterpoint', with its bursts of vocal samples,
screams, and subsonic bass. The screaching synths and rhythms comparable
to his drop beat ep slowly collide before decomposing into a final minute
of warm analog abstractions, ala cricklewood. The two tracks are
amazing, even for someone with as good a track record as David, I think
it would even be safe to call this his best work to date. He's definitly
broken the mold of his earlier work, and he's not one that'll be
pigeonholed in the future. Up next: cricklewood remixes....
