mental blox : machine <spinyl 12" SPIN004>

a1.machine (you are not a remix)
a2.machine (you are a remix)
b1.machine (you are not an atom heart remix)
b2.machine (you are a john tejada mix)

matt haines follows up the engaging and varied "there goes the boom" 12"
with 4 versions of one track one side being matt's with two versions
retaining the base melody in distinctly different contexts and the other
being a suite of remixes. matt has a densely syncopated approach to
dancefloor tracks that make the drum patterns melodic in their own right -
cut up electro cleanly interlocking snatches of patches in textural
conversation. "you are not a remix" is a hectic rhythm workout with digital
orchestra rants (perhaps in homage to the bombastic breakdowns of the
jonzun crew and fellow socal'ers uncle jamm's army), while "you are a
remix" is a sparser replay based around boogied up basslines and a
bleep-era atonalized theme, uncompleted by a snare-roll achilles heel. atom
heart remixes the track along the lines of this last mix, duplicating the
melody in bass with jeepy rhythm and erratic squirts of farty goodness. the
mix cuts loose midway through with a sample from steve poindexter's "work
that mutha fucker" (muzique MR-001) anchoring the dancefloor before
breaking down toward the end with an glorious skronk-beat mess. stark and
sweet. the label says there's also a john tejada mix, but all i could find
was a heavily reverbed bootleg of model 500's "night drive (thru babylon)"
(metroplex M-002). 7/10
