Has anybody else come across it? > What else is out on this label? Irene: Nuphonic has a good track record for putting out qualitymusic, most of it house-leaning. Recent releases from the label include the Chaser (Nigel Hayes and Lars "Funk D'void" Sandberg) remix of Marsel and a bit back Faze Action's "Kariba" (sp; got the record around here somewhere :)) On the compilation, Blaze are from New Jersey and have been consistently releasing incredible house music for the last ten years or so. They're currently getting lots of praise for "My Beat" on Slip N Slide. Kerri Chandler does vocal house and this more deep stuff as well; he's an American doing good things in house music. Yellow Sox have a good track record as well. Faze Action are British brothers about to release their second album of disco with a '99 twist, Ten City started in Chicago in the mid 80s and were one of the first house bands to produce an album and be successful (along with Inner City). Unfortunately, as can often happen, their label (Warner) wanted to water them down and move them from house to r n b (the same thing that happened with Inner City; hmmm, a trend here? ;)), so they quickly got disillusioned, though what they did produce over the short years they were together is heartful house: i.e songs not tracks, vocals with thought behind em, well sung. Byron Stingily was the group's main vocalist and now releases on New York's Nervous. He runs the Deep Soul label with Mike Dunn (another Chicago pioneer; his Magic Feet track gave a certain mag in the UK its name ;)). One of my top house tracks of 98 was Dunn's tribute to Armando Gallop (another Chicago pioneer) who passed away from leukemia a few years ago in his late 20s. B Rude Burke was also in Ten City, and he does this style of house now too. If you like this comp, you'll likely be into the compilation series on crammed/ssr in the same vein (with some of the same artists; sorry name escapes me and records here are a mess). Personally, I play a lot of this style in part 3 of the In The Mix shows, and you can hear that and read about this music in the House column (including the ssr/crammed comps whose names escape me) on Cognition Audioworks: http://www.globalserve.net/~cognition Hope this helps. Andrew :) PS If you can listen to RA, check out the Radio Utopia 1999: Millenium Funk premiere that just went online on Cognition; it's the same vibe and features Chaser, Muzique Tropique, etc. -- Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks/In The Mix 1096 Queen St #123 Halifax NS Canada B3H 2R9 TEL 902-422-7132 FAX 902-422-1262 http://www.globalserve.net/~cognition ONLINE now: B92/Rephlex/Transmat/12k/Caipirinha/Planet E premieres/contests In The Mix show 578:Juan Atkins/Low Res/Crank/Mark Wee
