There is a program called MetaSynth for the macintosh.  Part of it is a
sonogram editor, into which you can import an image, and play or process
it.  The vertical axis corresponds to frequency, and the horizontal to
time, while pixel intensity is mapped to.. er.. amplitude (at that
frequency and time).  Pretty amusing, anyway.  best regards!
