martin, you've brought up a point that i often think about re: IDM.

which IDM is classic? which will i be listening to in 1 year or 5
years?

it's really hard to say what i'll like in the years to come. i think
albums that are well thought out and whose concepts are realized are the
ones that i'll come back to in the future. most autechre falls into
this category, along with 3EF's semtex & BOC (and fair amount of other
stuff that i can't really think of right now). i still get excited
about a lot of music and buy much more than i really should but only a
small percentage really seems to stick. i'd like to think that there's
little talk of older music on this list b/c of our collective phychosis
& need to know what's new and not because "drill and bass is SOOOO
1997". ;)

continuous new technologies might also hurt timeless IDM. a lot of
times the music feels more like a reflection of the latest gadget rather
than an actual musical idea. i relish new sounds (dying to hear navy
warships), but i also want something behind the sounds...

a thought i often have - say all of our beloved musicians were born 200
years ago, which ones would be making music? and what kind of music
would they write? would aphex twin write operas, go mad trying to get
the bouncing balls out of his head, or what?

sorry for rambling,
