Metric was tons of fun. It's nice to think we may be finally gathering the IDM-heads scattered around So Cal into one place on a semi-regular basis. The Good: DJ's: it was fun for me to spin. Brock threw out a tasty set himself, as he always does, starting with some great Detroit Electro, then flowing through some Ambient stuff and into those fucked-up beats we all know and love. Metal Beast was good. I expected good things from Shad, and I expected things that would tend to the Abstract Jungle tip or noisy Kinesthesia tip. I was wrong: a lot of Cylob-type bloops and bleeps, pretty melodic loops overlayed with hard arrhythmic stabs. Very good. The Not-So-Good: The Plug Research set, unfortunately, tended to feature their housy a-sides rather than dealving into their more interesting b-sides. I'm not sure why, since the crowd was primed for a full-on headtrip, and instead was treated to what club DJs like to call experimental: conventional house beats with the occasional strange sample looped endlessly underneath. The Bad: My only complaint, really, was the early starting time. It ended up feeling like an early evening supper-club-type thing, making it awfully hard to forget that you had to work in the morning once midnight rolled around, and you'd been there four hours already. This is a very auspicious beginning. I hope we can eventually gather everybody who ever comes up to us at gigs and asks where they can hear more of this stuff. That would add up to 200 people, which ain't bad.
