Hi, Lance. After reading your response to my posting
about the Crank premiere, I just wanted to clarify how these
world premieres I'm doing work. (Like you, I too received a
CDR of the Crank album (Mille Plateaux version of it, as
opposed to the original version) and also have been playing it
out since late '98, well before this forthcoming release date
on Mille Plateaux in March.) The main thing about these
Cognition Audioworks premieres is that they are done in
such as way to benefit the artists, labels, and listeners, not
so that I can say "hey, I'm playing it first" or anything like that.
(Believe me, if I was into that, I would have played the Model
500 out in full and called it a world premiere the day I got it
in the mail, instead I waited till everything was set up. anway...)
These premieres are a lot of work, but because the artists,
labels, and listeners appreciate them, I'm doing more. (In
fact, some artists and labels are now asking me personally to do
the world premieres because they appreciate the exposure.)
The premieres are held approximately 3 weeks
before commercial release and are online in RA in full
for up to 7 days in order to give as many people as possible
a chance to check out the release before it comes out.
(I could have done this Crank premiere, for example, any
time after I got the CDR, but because the premieres are done
closer to release date in order to benefit the artists and the labels,
the premiere was pushed back a couple of times; this tends
to happen with most of the premieres, including the Stewart
S. Walker that also went online today; Merrick told me
he was pushing the release date back, so when he asked me
to delay on doing the premiere by a week or two I pushed the
premiere back in order to benefit his label and Stewart as well).
They're not about a "I have a promo of this release, so if
I play it all, that's a world premiere" either because I obtain
permission from the labels to do these premieres and the artists
(such as Danny Zelonky) and labels appreciate the exposure
because they are promoted so that anyone who wants to can
check them out, plus they're done close enough to release date
that they're not forgotten about by the time the release is available,
plus far enough in advance so they're more special than just playing
the whole thing after it's out already. (I've been
lucky enough to have a copy of the Super Collider album
(from Vogel and Lidell) since September 98, for example, but have
yet to get permission to do a world premiere, so I haven't
done it and maybe won't be premiering it in full ever. I have
been playing tracks from it here and there, (which would be
previews, (or exclusive previews if no one else had played
those yet)), but it won't be done as a world premiere (i.e
played online in RA in full for a week) until permission is
obtained (it's distributed by Sony in the end, so it's a lot of
work ;) Wanted to premiere the Pole 2, for example, but
Matador said they wouldn't be allowing anyone to do this
kind of premiere, so not all companies are into it, but most
are happy to have these world premieres done)
 Same thing for Daniel's Mad Monkey compilation;
he's sent out the promos and myself and others with a copy
will be playing selections before release; but Daniel has given
me the goahead on doing the world premiere, so I'll be playing
it online in full in RA for a week 3 weeks before release and
calling it a world premiere even though selections have been
played out elsewhere. Sometimes no one else has played anything
anywhere from the releases I'm premiering, sometimes some of
the tracks have been played. But it's sort of like setting a record
and getting in Guiness; if you do a world record and there aren't
any witnesses, it isn't considered a world record to Guiness. I
do the same thing with the world premieres: I make the premiere
as available as possible so that it really is, IMO and in the opinion
of the artists and labels, a world premiere. Hope this makes sense.
It's all about the music in the end, and I'm putting in the work with
these premieres to best benefit that, not myself. Thanks. Andrew :)
(PS I'm struggling over getting the Crank/Low Res feature
written up for Magic Feet because the computer is fighting me
every step of the way; I'm thus in a very foul mood and may have taken
your post the wrong way. No offense is meant in this reply.)
