Supposedly, VERBATIM also give suboptimal quality. funny that you say that, maxell is my stock blank. i think you had a random problem not specific to the media. all cd-r's appear to track slower, but i've never had one be unrecognizable. i recommend trying a comparison yourself, as i did with about 10 brands. the results of my survey (two-observer, double-blind): maxell the best sony (two varietites) very good memorex okay verbatim & fuji abominable differences between brands manifested themselves as a loss of detail, primarily. not related to tracking. you should definitely consider writing at a slower speed for higher audio fidelity. i found a monstrous difference between 4x and 2x write speeds, but very little difference between 2x and 1x write speeds. n
