East Flatbush Project featuring DeS - "Tried
by 12" (10/30 Uproar)

Yes, this the song that's (going to)
been remixed by Ae, and released on a
different label, I imagine. Anyhow, I picked
this up from the nice people at Sandbox,
after listening to .ra and deciding it stands
alone, plus I though it'd be nice to hear the
source material Ae was working with.
Apparently this 12" was released in 1996,
and the remix by Ae was already played on
Coldcut's radio show back in February.

The format is the standard
Radio/Orig/Instrumental/A Capella.

This track starts with some Eastern-
sounding plucked
strings before the rapping comes in. The
beat comes in quickly, and isn't heavy at all,
it's more like a clock or a metronome just
keeping the time, showing off the lyrical
talent of this group. The song is roughly a
story about a party that got fucked up and
wound up in a murder, with the do-or-get-
done reasoning. "I'd rather get tried by 12,
than carried by 6."

        I don't know who the MC's are
(anyone??) but they remind me of the Brand
Nubian/Grand Puba style, which I'm a fan
of. I liked where hip-hop was in '92, on up to
'94/5, but then it seemed to take a bad turn.
I think this 12" represents where hip-hop
*should* have gone. .
