This is a live review of Nate DeYonker's live set last Wednesday at Foran's. It's live in the sense that I wrote this pretty much stream-of-conscience as Nate was playing. It was a really good set, and I'm much enthused for Nate's upcoming material to be released. cheers, Bill VanLoo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- first track - slow, hip-hop sounding kick/snare built up to more slow 4/4 techno-ish groove. tweaked vocal sample, great processing on it. second track - electro-ish drums, great bass drops. BVL responds to bass. third track - strange little melody over subdued drums fourth track - or is it still the third track? sounds like early aphex twin, hard to describe fifth track(?) - wow, crazy piano-ish chords that then lead into wicked banging techno...really interesting tonal sweeps that sound like something between a piano and a harpsichord, but it's the drum programming that really makes this track. dope open hi-hats, solid 4-on-the-floor kick with additional percussion and weird christian vogel or titonton-ish sounds thrown in for good measure. this is the best track so far, IMO. It builds up and then climaxes with a little burst of signal processing, into just the piano sound. sixth track - some sort of submerged vocal loop with weird DSP'd out noises start this out...there's an insistent little bass figure underneath it all...everything drops, then the DSP'd noises come back. This is a really spooky, uneasy sort of track; there's some dissonance and feedback going on, and not much of the structure that had characterized the previous tracks. seventh track - a really synthetic bassline starts this out, with a little feedback part acting as a pad. then a lovely little piano-sort of sound comes in, and all of a sudden everything is lovely, this really is pretty. Then the hip-hop drums come in! my head is nodding, this is great drum programming and it just fits perfectly with this happy little ditty. There are some beautifully programmed little rolls and drops. This track sounds a little like Autechre, except that's sort of a lazy comparison, and this is a bit more obvious in its sounds and melodies than Autechre's electronic hip-hop tends to be. It's damn good, though, it's just different. I'd drop this in a set with Push Button Objects or your other favorite IDM white-boy electronic hip-hop ;-) eighth track - starts out with just bass drops, then in comes some weird bleepy sound to offset it. There's no clear rhythm at first, but I feel it coming....I keep hearing different things happening in this rhythm-without-a-rhythm, it's like I keep grasping for a steady pulse to hang on to, but Nate keeps it just out of a comfortable reach. Cool little feedback swells occur occasionally...then a strange, almost accordian-sounding melody starts up. This reminds me a little of the first Smyglysnna track on the Plug Research & Development compilation. I guess that's fitting, because the first time I ever met Nate we were both talking about sending our material to PR. :) It drops to just a chord, then the rhythm comes back, but now it's all fallen into place, and it's suddenly gelled and all of it makes sense. Those accordian-sounding chords are now playing in a really odd time signature compared to the 4/4 of the underlying rhythm...I get little hints of 2-step drum-n-bass, but also some weird slow hip-hop tempo, too. Very interesting.... ninth track - starts out with feedback squall, but then a gentle little bell or xylophone melody comes in over the chaos. Nate works some cool analog delay effects as the melody plays, then it all drops except for the delay feeding back. Evidently the track stopped, but Nate re-started it, and all of a sudden it's like weird electro! Quick electro, almost synth-pop drums come up, and a perky kind of bassline starts as well. Definitely a change from the beginning of the track, if this is indeed the same track still... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mr o wrote: > > There will be some fun and free IDM/Detroit techno-type > happenings tomorrow night at Forans' in downtown Detroit > Wednesday the 16th. > > Nate DeYonker (live PA) > DJ Horsepower > Michael Taylor > Ian Dinsmor > > Forans is a pretty kicking Irish Pub with good drinks, and > it's a very nice place to hear some nifty sounds.
