Yes, it was BJ Cole. He has definitely played/been sampled on a number of ambient albums including The Orb and KLF. He also plays on a hard to find Billie Ray Martin 2x12" on the R&S sublabel Apollo called 4 Ambient Tales. BRM is best known for her diva vocal stylings for Electribe 101 and her own solo material including the cheeze pop hit "Your Loving Arms' (produced by Brian (BT) Transeau), but she did this vinyl only EP 1993 and it is simply gorgeous - smoky torch songs with production by The Grid and pedal steel from BJ Cole. Highly recommended if you're into atmospheric yet warm female vocal tracks. Back to BJ Cole...he has an album or two of his own material released on Rykodisc, I beleive. He also was a guest player on the most recent tour by The Verve, replacing the guitarist who decided he didn't want to tour at the 11th hour.
