(idm) reviews of promos etc.

Quote from a TV programme last night: " Recently it's been found
that music has a profound and magnetic influence on its listeners "

I'm a musical magpie, and my quest is: Hunt, Cull, Possess &
Assimilate. Witha DJ friend's generous help in lending me a couple
of promos over the weekend, I've thoroughly overloaded on music-
although, as you probably all know - loads of it is still not enough.

Bill and Ben "South of the River" is actually pretty darn hot stuff.
It's fairly straight up and down dub, which, on first listen, I was
unimpressed by, but after giving it a chance, I must say I like their
style of quick short busts (reminiscent of Wire's early outings)
except that the running time shows 68 mins, but the final 8 minutes
or whatever - is..... just the sound of a stylus crackling over the
run-out groove at the end of a record. COP OUT you guys!!! (Tracks
4, 8 & 10 are the standouts.)

I've just browsed through the latest locally available issue
(September) Mixmag - which has got a really good article about the
new Coldcut -interviews Mesrs. Black & More and sheds light on their
attitudes etc - well worth a look.

Must say, even through this glut of music I've been trying to listen
through, I'm loving Coldcut's "Let Us Play" - a solidly phenomenal
album right through, with variety, eclecticism and freshness. Track
12 =Timber: that one just makes me SOOOOO happy ::: it starts with
the morse code SOS blips. Cute and no doubt cheesy, but really
sweet. Kinda thing I loop over and over, and it makes me smile
everytime. Can't comment on the CD-Rom that comes with it, since
I've only got a promo version - but apparently it's "cool".

As for the other promo's : the one had absolutely no giveaway as to
what it was, but I described it to the intelligent folks on the IDM
list and got an answer immediately: Flavornaughts "My Inbred Pedigree
Chums". (Thanks Colin & Guerilla!) According to Tully it's "chill-
out lounge special" (and coming from him that's deprecating) but I
enjoyed it - really cool, laid back jazzy stuff played by - WOW -
real instruments. Late night relaxing or Sunday afternoon lounging.

Next : Used & Abused. A year in the life of Fused and Bruised.
This is a 9 track sampler which comes wrapped in a sheet of
sandpaper. Abrasive, anyone ?!?! It's something I wouldn't go out
and buy specifically, but I taped it anyway for another
play-through, coz it's 'interesting' and has areas of brilliance
here and there.

The Free the Funk double CD compilation (96 release) that I bought
starts off promisingly with Cujo, and has some high points in Fila
Brazillia, Monkey Mafia (my favourite track, this one) and DJ Food,
but for the rest doesn't really go anywhere. Loops and loops and
repeats. And then more of the same. But nice 'n backgroundy in a
jazzy vein.

Also vinyl on Clear Records : As One "The Message in Herbie's
Shirts" is really enjoyably spacey - fits the psychotic ambience
category quite nicely... if there is such a thing. :-) Glad I got
this one. Also a '96 release (sorry to bore you by going over old
stuff).

Speedy J "Public Energy No 1" - track 8 "Tesla" is a nice synth
paddy one with squidges and gloops. A moment of softness in a
swamp of rather interesting sounds. Actually I like the whole of
Public Energy No. 1, but it's not suitable for any and every mood...

Also just got Vulva's Birdwatching (Rephlex, 1996) which is hugely
bleepy and bloopy and really fun. Once you get over the obvious
_double entendres_ of their titles ("Hornithology", "Thrush",
"Lunchbox" etc...) Maybe if I wasn't female... or maybe, if ever I
have a band, I'll call it Penis.
