mike: i can't remember the specifics but i saw you asking about phthalo releases. Navy Warship is definitely the best of the bunch in my opinion. i remember you asking about Logans EP but i havent heard it.. the ones i can comment on (copyin the titles off his web page): .PHTHALO 03: Phthalocyanine: Viridian EP - more minimal and less hectic/noisy than Navy Warship, might be up your alley. simplistic beats and bleeps and the occassional noisy section. this is older than Navy Warship. .PHTHALO 04: Crank: Wanton Phenomena LP - has been rereleased on Mego or somewhere as real CD. this is one of the better phthalo releases. this is the same guy as Low Res. picks up nice grooves now and then and keeps my attention. tracks 7 has some ambient bits that remind me of some of the noises they have in eraserhead. some swingy jazz like on low res CD too. .PHTHALO 05: Phthalocyanine's Zacks EP - like Navy Warship --if you care, beware that artwork doesnt begin until now (the previous releases are just a CDR in a case, unless he added artwork to them since) .PHTHALO 07: V/vm's The Stranger EP - entire tracks of muffly noise, to sound like spooky wind, where the filter changes slowly. was ok in the car one time when i didnt really concentrate on it. --now in addition to artwork they've got high-quality silver/silver CDRs: .PHTHALO 09: O.S.T.'s Live @ Static LP - like navy warship but the distortion is more grating (less lofi) - gets boring .PHTHALO 10: 4mod3: A Translation of Simplicity LP - less distorted than most of the other releases, or a cleaner filtered distortion. they have odd filtered sounds, like organs thru ringmod and res/cutoff filter and then sometimes reversed. sparse ambient and then picks up a beat now and then. gets boring but ok for background listening. i'd recommend based on my preferences to start with 04 (Crank), 05 (Zacks), 10 (4mod3) maybe in that order. but if you weren't into Navy Warship then i'm not sure..... christophger === _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
