here's a low-end setup (some electronics knowledge required)
buy some cheap casio keyboard, that has a line-out port =)
MIDI is nice, but not necassary.. then you can buy one of those toys (this I
think would really be wicked, but mine broke..dammit.. kids toys for ya :D)
anyway, one of those toys that you speak into and it distorts your voice.. I
can make my sound sound come-to-daddy'ish.. anyhow, someone who is
electronics-minded should be able to patch that into a box with 1/4" inputs
and outputs (some conversion may be needed?) and then plug it into your
thing.. the one I had also turns whaever you feed into a robotic monotone
with the push of a button.. maybe patch some buttons.. the thing has a
slider on the slide for frequency of the distortion, somewhat like a
filter.. it's damn cool :)
i always thought it would be cool, but anyway that's a cheap distortion box,
the toy only costs like $5.
anyhow, you can use whatever sounds from there and load into CoolEdit or
SoundForge to edit them, and then use FastTracker as a sequencer to put
everything together..
also, there's this thing called buzz that's got it's own internal synth or
something? I hear it kicks ass..
but anyway, that's the cheapest setup, but I've heard some quite awesome
things done with casio sounds. synthpads and beeps, etc. but that's the
cheapest (?) way to go.
Buzz probably has a better sound arsenal, also you can check out Reality (a
software synth)..
as for cost, I'm not sure, but if you're into the warez kind of thing I
reckon you can get it for free.
