>> I remember when the 12" with [?old Soft MAchine lead singer] >> came out (94?), I thought they lost a lot of their originality. > Robert Wyatt it was (he was the Soft's drummer too). That green one, "United > Kingdoms", with 2 tracks with Wyatt, was excellently original. It was a blend of > an English folky feel with electronica and worked excellently! It was 93 I think. I agree, and 'excellently original' is how I'd describe most Ultramarine stuff. As for Wyatt, his appearance on United Kingdoms has led me to investigate further securing a taped copy of his new album 'Schleep' for a friend, a great little LP which I've really been getting into over the past few weeks. Folk, jazzy and dischordant in about equal measure and beautiful in almost all. If you can get over what some people seem to thing is a 'whiney voice' and the occasional Pink Floyd style guitar solo (mercifully short and no more painful than the one on Hard Normal Daddy - honest!). Anyway, it's not IDM, and it's not even electronic, but it is very good, musically and lyrically. There's also a great interview floating around on the web somewhere (I know this isn't a lot of use to anyone without the URL, but I just don't have any idea where it was). So yeah, more Robert Wyatt discussion please!! Can anyone reccomend any Soft Machine/Matching Mole/Wyatt solo stuff, or wants to tape trade these with anything I've got? I hear Rock Bottom is supposed to be the seminal album, but it's all hype until I hear it. gb. -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/4anuvada.htm f o L D o dlr WTC "Another D.A at the Office - free fiction & an animated donut!"
