the tower here that has wire conviniently skipped the issue wuth the coil interview. is it online anywhere? also, i really did not like the vvm/skam/etc article in the wire. for the first time in readng that magazine, i have to agree with the criticism that the writing is pretentious -- and obviously it differs from writer to writer and article to article -- but damn, this really bummed me out. first, i really enjoy a lot of the music that has crossed over from noise into idm and idm into noise.. mego, vvm, electric company, phthalocyanine. and i thought it was facinating that the wire would attempt to cover such a odd little scene. i give them HUGE credit for that. BUT, the whole thing seemed to be written not from the standpoint of someone who likes the music, but rather from someone who maybe didnt like it, but was trying to put it in the context of a new music revolution. and really, this puts me off. and perhaps it is just as much the fault of the artists as it is the writer. i have been working at a college radio station for 6 years now. in that time i have done *plenty* of noise shows -- playing noise tracks, putting things together that should not go together (you know, that thing that spooky claims is so amazing), layering sounds, cutting stuff up, looping it.. and you know what? tons of folks were doing that before me, at kuci and other college stations. tons of folks still do it. it happens everywhere. and often. and i love it. but it just really annoys me to see artists and writers -- especially in music i *really* enjoy and appreciate -- trying to make it out to be something so new and abstract and unique -- because maybe it is compared to mainstream music, but really, if you dig a little deeper, its not. so, i dont know what my point is, or if im being clear, but i was annoyed. and we already have one dj spooky capitalizing on what college radio has been doing for years. we dont need more.. i dunno, diy = good! do more of it! YAY! pointless analyzing = something that annoys the fuck out of me. im curious if the writer even listens to the music. and if some of those annoying quotes from the artists were taken out of context. oh well, so goes my first rant on noise :) chris. __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [*<n/ff> <=rr*/a|>r] - wednesdays 7-8 pm riders of the plastic groove - fridays 9-midnight kuci 88.9fm po box 4362 irvine ca 92616 green eggs and ham info line: 714.647.7750
