For me, the inferior quality of the DACs, noisier or not, makes the = original DX7 more characterful than the later ones (DX7II/S/FD). The = later ones do have their place, though. The 4-op instruments are generally considered inferior because of the = missing 2 operators; you=E2=80=99re a bit more limited as to what you = can do. Beyond the original 6-op FM stuff and the zillion cut-down = instruments based on that tech, as time passes you start getting into = sample playback (what they called AWM), and we enter a different = argument=E2=80=A6 e > On Sep 28, 2018, at 12:58 PM, justin reed <xxxxxx.xxxx@xxxxx.xxx> = wrote: >=20 > I have always been curious if there is some secret sauce to the dx7 = that makes it superior tp the later Yamaha FMs... >=20 > it was my understanding that later models only expanded on the = functionality of the first flagship with new technologies and better = audio...is that wrong? >=20 > are there functions possible with a dx7 that are not possible on a = tx817 or v50 etc... >=20 > genuinely curious question from an admitted FM dummy >=20 > best > jr
