The Montreal review was interesting... In Denver, Tortoise strayed far from the originals and the show was laden with improvisation. The sound guy DID play a part, feeding crowd noise back through the PA and experimenting w/ reverb and effects. The encores were played at *half speed* which was interesting in it's own right 'cause it was probably to make us all go home or something, and must be technically difficult :-) The interlocking vibes/marimba mallet playing was Steve Reich-ian at its best. The playing was more confident and precise than when I saw them last time here. The 'violins' and melodica playing from the recordings were pure synth. No "Grazing in the Grass" as an encore this time around, but the show was "Worthy!" Interesting crowd mix of IDM-ers, jazzbos and alt.post-rock types... The guy who posted about seeing these shows in our time is probably right- Tortoise music will be debated for a long time to come. -Jefferson ---------------------------------------------------------------------- El blatent promo for the serious believers> The poster from the Denver show is up at www.cryptographics.com/tortois2.htm
