Bola forever! Okay, so it's already 1999, but I just listened to my copy of Bola's new full-length, and I wish everyone in IDM would consider this disc.... easily my favorite pure IDM album of the year. What I've always liked about Bola's gorgeous yet tiny output is the almost retro IDM style similar to the early stuff IDM was founded on - b12, black dog, autechre, aphex twin, higher intelligence agency... all that yummy, groovy, dark and delicious stuff that seems to have been lost lately (I haven't really found any of the latest aphex/autechre stuff as appealing as the early stuff, but maybe that's just me). Is IDM dead? No, I think it's evolved into strange new territory over the years. Is anyone besides Bola doing dark melodic electronic music? Can't really think of any. Grr... But anyway, Other things I've just picked up which I think are kinda groovy during a binge in London's SoHo district: Ian Pooley's remixes of The Cardigan's "Your New Cuckoo" (Stockholm) It's old, but rather tasty tech-house and ambient. Low Res - Anuck (Sublime) Picked it up on white label... probably rather old, but has a few tasty remixes by Juan Atkins. Derrick May - Innovator (Transmat) 2 CDs of the similar-sounding Detroit techno by one of the most established dance-music pioneers of this decade. Includes some stellar tracks, but could use a little cropping... one CD would have been sufficient. Back to cleaning my room, Aaron
