Night and Day - Manchester, 27/6/98 Not sure who the first DJs were - presumably from the larger Skam collective. Quite nice. First live act - Toolshed Allstars, led by Graham Massey. Hmmm - at times this was interesting-ish dub/jazz/electronics, at others deeply tedious muzo-thrashing. Then more spinning - some of your IDM favourites - Bochum Welt, MoM, even FSOL - Papua New Guinea; this was Rakhee (?) coordinator of Toolshed I think. Chris Jeffs began with a special intro thing before the first tune which was a bouncy happy soft-electro number. He really is the most unlikely figure in *whatever we're calling it this week*, looking bored behind his compact rack. Just before the second tune he gave us a little commentary on his ESI32 "Loading, please wait; Loading, please wait. 95%". This was an incredible electro tune with speech-synth rap - the next single, apparently. Most of the rest were familiar tracks (including Kinesthesia material) but I enjoyed them a lot more than the first time I saw him at Blech. Near the end he went "Look at me, look at me please, everybody look at me" - what a comedian. I felt a new burst of Cylob enthusiasm whereas the previous set cooled it. Rakhee continued with the lovely track 8 from AB3 and MoM etc. then Jones took over for old-school electro, rather inevitably. A nice low-key night. adam
