sheesh - where do i begin..... what a sweet party. a veritable three ring circus of high quality "comin' from the D" music, with every room humpin' with vibe. decided late (for some reason) to make the 190 mile drive up from the heart of rock and roll for this little shindig. tried unsuccessfully to drum up companions from a certain walking electronic music databass and a particular IDM mail order magnate, but no takers, so i was on my own. hopped on the interstate and dropped in (appropriately) the new monolake: interstate. wow -- premier driving tunage, and even better than hongkong. got to the space about 11:00, nothing really going on yet. three different live gear PA setups, + 3 DJ stations in 3 sonically separate rooms (even though the club 1X really isn't all that big). hung out while people showed up. saw a guy with really deepset sunken cheeks who looked familiar. hmm, who is that, iggy pop? no, it's tony childs! struck up a conversation with mr. surgeon based on the set i'd seen him spin 2 weeks prior in cleveland (in the midst of severe food poisioning) and 2 years prior at hard black evening in k'zoo. seems he was supposed to be spinning in toronto that night, but they wouldn't let him accross due to work permit problems; kind of an inverse hawtin. he was genuinely bummed that he only got to spin twice in north america on a two week trip. seems he'll be back in the summer. really cool and friendly guy. so many sets, where to begin.... punisher was spinning darkstep hard and fast. i hope she's getting paid well, cuz that girl works hard for the money, and she earns it. she's spinning everywhere these days, and the exposure is well deserved. i look for big things from her in the future.... hooked up with the three-one-three posse, twas good to see bill van loo, brian bickel, warren lapham, dale lawrence and others again and was good to meet steve from planetE, sean, and greg "name your priceline.com" earle in person. by then we learned that hannah was spinning in the upstairs VIP loft and that carl craig would be going on at 1:00. so we quickly skammed our way upstairs (thanks to the planetE intern connection -- big UPs!!) WOW - how often do you get to hear carl craig spin for 40 people in your living room?!?!? man, his set was sooooo sweet and the vibe was so chill and intimate that i could not stop movin' and i couldn't tear myself from his sweaty groove, even though i new puzzlebox / optic nerve was doing a live elektro PA downstairs. carl's DJ status is well deserved, and he proved it once again with one of the most soulful sets i've ever experienced. dropped everything from herbert to KDJ to rhythm & sound / savage to moroder to loads of groovy whites that i'd kill for. i can't tell you how positive the groove was up there, everyone just shakin' their rumps as carl built and built.... eventually i ripped myself away cuz i knew that BMG and crew were going on at 2:00. got downstairs to hear the tail end of mr . jovanblade's set. he was workin it as usual, telephone glued to his ear. haven't seen him spin in a couple of years, and he was hot as ever. cutting and scratching, working doubles hard. he had the crowd jacking hard, and he knew it. way to go TP!! around 2:00 TP dialed 10-10-*67 on his handset, and ectomorph fired it up. when i heard the 606 line for 'cease to exist' drop in and DJ rotater's frantic scratching, i knew we were in for it. brendan was working everything hard through a board with a heavy delay unit, so the whole set had kind of a reverbed dubby feel which brought out some really cool nuances of the ecto-tracks. well orchestrated and it all flowed together well, with 606 / rotater fills while they reset the patches on the 2 SH101's and the pro-one. on one of those breaks, DJ rotater was working doubles of (i think) krok: amp terror so hard that i thought fragments of the crossfader were gonna fly off and that he was going to send me into a pokemon epileptic seizure with his menacing scratch surgery. "sitting in a version" was complete with high tech $14.95 voice steeler vocodomegaphone. ended i beleive with "haunting" and haunt they did. spooky home grown ann arbor electro. after they turned off the boxes, rotater treated us to the final four DMC battle scratching championship. i almost thought he was going to unzip his fly and ... well let's just say he scratched with just about every other part of his body. working the crossfader with his mouth, behind the back, under the leg, 360s, the works -- the whole time without missing a beat. mindblowing and a little disorienting, he was so furious. i had to get on the road at that point to make it home to cleveland in time to catch my flight this morning (god, hope i make it). it was all good, and i think i missed about half of it due to having one set of ears and legs to partake in the good stuff which was flowing. big ups to solar-intuit for a high quality, all thriller- no filler event. it's good to know that good parties still happen. i'm really glad i made the journey.... peeeeeeece, Jeff Davis xxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx ph: 216.533.6303 fx: 216.266.2310 text message: xxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxx.xxx.xxx pHlow.linx: home.earthlink.net/~phlow/ Bochum Welt: www.bochumwelt.com Rotator Locator hyperreal.org/music/rotator/ -----Original Message----- From: xxx-xxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx [mailto:xxx-xxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx]On Behalf Of jonlayne Sent: Friday, March 26, 1999 8:57 PM To: xxxxxxxx@xxx.xxx; xx-xxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx; xxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx Subject: (313) Re: [mw] TOMORROW NIGHT DETROIT DETROIT.......WHERE IT ALL BEGAN COMIN FROM THA D RECORD RELEASE PARTY 2575 MICHIGAN AVE., DETROIT MI 18 + .
