(idm) ninety-eight

I've come out of lurker mode to say a few things. It seems
like '97 has been year of the copycat. I just hope that in '98 there is
more originality in electronic music. There is nothing wrong with
building upon or being influenced by other peoples style, that's
critical, but it's important to create something original yourself at
the same time. Down with sampling "the sound" of other people in '98.
I hope fewer afx, µ-ziq, plug, squarepusher emulators popup and instead
a new bread of artists who have their own voice will take over the air
waves. A message to anyone who doesn't freak things with their own
unique style: let the above mentioned artists do their work themselves.
A lot of great stuff came out this year too, I don't mean to
overlook it. As an idm subscriber it is particularly frustrating that
the choices on the idm ballot lack definition. I can't see why a forum
such as idm, which is so diverse, would host a vote which limited the
categories to specific choices. It should be left wide open who one
wants to pick for top album of the year or whatever fields are on it.
Then the largest number of entries "wins." Feel free to send any idm
votes for your favorite stuff not listed on the idm ballot to this
address and I will keep track and putup a website with the listings.
One of the coolest things that popped up this year were a few
american labels. My limited budget, I am a cook at a chinese restaurant
if you must know, was stretched to the max when purchasing singles for
$6. Not only was most of the domestic music I stumbled upon and read
about here in idm great, but the artists were clearly not doing it for
the money. That is very refreshing. I wish I could have afforded some
of the more talked about releases, but that's life. I'm not into
d/l'ing audio files either. I consider my cooking to be as much an art
as making music, and I'd be po'd if a customer didn't pay for their meal
and then I couldn't be paid for some reason. There is no justification
in my mind for distributing someone else's music without consent,
regardless of intent.
The point of my post is that as we head towards '98 it is
exciting to think that some of the talented folks we all talk about on
the list will begin to develop their own unique style instead of trying
to sound like a few artists who created such a spark. In addition, as
new artists popup and generate media buzz and garnish a mention in idm,
hopefully we will be exposed early to the next thing in recorded sound,
whatever that may be. Looking forward to keeping up with idm in '98,
lets turn things around and make this a more intelligent listserv.
Anyone interested in exchanging recipes lemme know.
