Re-view: Roupe / Transport Solutions / Dot Records / DOT1209 / Releasedate: 12.01 Tracks: A1. Joe Baxi! A2. Herbie Strides Again B1. Joe Baxi! (Friend remix) B2. Herbie Strides Again. (Metamatics remix) Sorry for the delay people, I promised a review of this 50% November harvest from Dotlandia (the other 50% being Quant) a long time ago. Nevertheless, here it is, pay attention. Roupe is the second non-swedish signing of Dot, and with releases on GPR and Resource in the backpack Dot is a brilliant label to continue to. The new Quant 12" (Breaking and Entering) and this one was released on the same date, and you who have heard the new Quant one or read my review on it know that it's easy to put just about anything in the shadow of such a awesome record. Which is exactly what I have done. Anyway, we're probably better off not comparing the two. After all, they aren't at all very alike. Transport Solutions is the story of two tracks on their way through New Delhi in rush-hour. It's some crazy shit. Joe Baxi! is a strange hiphop jam in space, a really slow, dark acidtweeky thigie, but somehow it just doesn't do it for me. There's just not enough action in it, needless to say lack of action can be just as nice, but IMO the track just doesn't stand up to it. I would have had the "Herbie Strides Again" track as an opener instead of this one, because that's where the action it. Some lo-key electro sounds accompanied by chopped up rhythms - gangsta style. Very, very skillful drum and bass, I immediately though that this was the Friend remix, it has a very "Friendly" sound about it. I suppose the title is nicked from the movies about the magic beetle because this track is somewhat like a soundtrack to "Herbie" driving around in a crowded New Delhi with the elevating wheels, flying over rooftops. It's all a blast actually. It's at times like this I don't understand how people can buy friggin Metalheadz records, this is where drum and bass should be at. Not moulded for the dancefloor like the Goldiepossestuff but it works perfectly anyway. And that, if something, have to mean a lot. I think Jenkinson, Plug and Amon Tobin. The future of D&B. The Friend remix of Joe Baxi! is like nothing Friend has ever done before. Gone is the clippering drum and bass that has been his trademark on the earlier three records released. Gone to leave place for some crazy-shit backbeat bongos. Friend is building up a quite flexible musical foundation. And I dig it the most. Metamatics are remixing "Herbie" like nearly everything they have done so far. Top. Dot and Clear seems to be the ultimate combination, they should do a MASK and form DEAR. This track is a fantastic ending to a very high quality Dotrelease. Not that anything else was expected, but still, it's remarkable. "Transport Solutions" and "Breaking and Entering" are concluding the first year in the life of Dot. And what a year. Not only have thay released some of this years finest records, they have also managed to get them out to the people (which isn't to common). But the releaseschedule for 1998 isn't very laidback either - first off is the unique Endlessnessism compilation in February, later on a Roupe album, Quant album and a lot of 12"s. I say armours on if you don't feel like getting speared by these knights. Cause I reckon we ain't seen much yet. And Roupe is most definately a worthy knight.
