hi all, just got back from San Francisco and wanted to mention that Amoeba Music (either branch!) is really better (and cheaper) at CDs than a lot of the shops here in England - well, not specialised single-genre shops, maybe, but it's so wide-ranging yet expert in individual sections, so it rules. Whilst I was there I picked up the Ill compilation "Spunk Jazz", which came out a coupla years back, but I've come to the conclusion it's the best 'drill+bass' compilation out there. People like Paddington Breaks, Animals On Wheels, and various other Planet-Mu affiliated artists generally kick ass on it, and the Bubbah's Tum track (same one as remixed by Boards Of Canada?) is real nice too. Are Ill still releasing stuff? Were they run by an idm artist? (I note they're out of Ladbroke Grove in London.) Finally got round to listening to "Simply Faboo" by The Gentle People on Rephlex, too - it gets a wholehearted recommendation from me, atleast. Real stylish exotica with tiny bits of braindance influence spiced in there. Seems like Rephlex are actually moving towards 'song'-based, vocal tunes even more than ever, judging by recent releases. Aw, and another quick plug for a recent mp3 release on Monotonik, cos I never really got any feedback on it, and I really like it still. The "Nachos Supreme EP" from 3818919/w goes from both the real mellow almost Plone-ish and the funkier rhythm-y idm-stuff, 4 tracks, freely downloadable, BBC Micro speech synth used, what more could you ask for?
