smithsonian/folkways has released 17 volumes in their 'music of indonesia' series, not all of it is gamelan, but there's much good stuff to be heard. should be pretty widely available. also, local (chapel hill) label Music of the World has released a couple of nice gamelan CDs, including "The Sultan's Pleasure, Javanese Gamelan & Vocal Music" which is excellent, more slow-paced stuff. <http://www.musicoftheworld.com>. you might also track down some of the old nonesuch/explorer releases, like 'the jasmine isle' or something like that. super-dodgy label Interra has also released a couple of gamelan discs. and I'll second the recommendation for the Fahnestock South Sea Expedition disc. ethan
