now: Ae in Toronto, formerly: (idm) yaaaawwn....cryosleep disengaged...

well I don't know if am really an old school IDMster, but used to be "Magic
Hands". (.....................?)
I've been on and off this list for 3 or more years.

Anyhow, I am now a despised and unfairly maligned user of a free mail
account. Said account has been malfunctioning for two months such that I
have received all the posts, but have been unable to send any mail. Very
frustrating. Especially when very current threads must pass me by. I
certainly lost my chance to do a timely review of the Autechre (non)show
here in Toronto.

Someone had posted a revie of Ae's Vancouver show--no lights, 4 candles--so
I was, despite a nasty case of the flu, up for something different. The
Toronto promoter was adamant that no glowsticks impinge upon their planned
hot & dark atmosphere (so said the flyer). But really, a nightclub (in this
case the Opera House) is just a dark, smelly, dank, uncomfortable room with
some flashy lights and (hopefully) cool music. Take away the lights and the
music had better deliver!

Ae had been billed as the headliner, but, instead, played in the middle of
the show, opening for local hero, Ritchie Hawtin. Unfortunately they played
a opening-act-type all too brief set. (Felt like less than an hour, anyone
else care to dispute?) The set comprised 6 wicked/lovely tracks, I would
say, each more chopped and spliced than the last. One of the fellas spent
the whole time hunkered down behind some little stack of equipment--it was
mounted at desk height, he would have been perfectly comfortable seated, but
instead, he stood, bent at the waist, so that he was more or less invisible.
(Not that this is a bad thing, just a very IDM-why
would-you-go-to-see-an-electronic-act-live kinda thing. The other stood
behind an adjoining table, overseeing some sort of big board.

The show started late. I was sick. When Ae left, I left too. How was
Hawtin?

slightly more current musings:

Depth Charge: Blue Lipps (CDep)

'70s flavoured funk thing, good, but not great--lacks the ingenuity and
darkness that made every track on Nine Deadly Venoms superb. Production is a
bit brittle (think AM transistor radio) too. Hmmm.

DC-Heads, how do the Alexander's Dark band releases compare--and where would
I find a discog? (Already checked Phinnweb)

thanks,

Matt
