This is the ages old faux-pas of the 'InvisibleJukeBox',

play music that the artist (who you as the journalist LIKE and have chosen
to 'TEST') will know/like/have good things to say about or
play music that will utterly confound/anger/condescend to him/her?

Depends on your life outlook, I 'spose.

It's like they get Philip Glass in there and play him Steve Reich.
A loaded circumstance, of course, but when was the last time you heard
Glass actually talk about Reich?
There's more politics involved than actually testing the interviewee's
musical 'geek-ness' or some such rate-able trait.
If they had played him, say, Aaliyah or The Mavericks or such, he would
have most likely said (being Jim O'Rourke)
'Oh this is great, what is it'. And what fun is there in that?

Being honest with yourself, you want to interviewee to either:

1) slam something completely, especially when it deserves it or is
something that the interviewee has creative ties to (bad
allegiances/colalborations/PC) or

2) praise Allah in said audio's presence, great when you A) haven't
actually heard of the audio's creator and B) like the interviewee's taste
(not necessarily his/her music).

You can go on and on and on about this.
Ultimately you realise, the entire thing (like everything else in the Wire)
is a giant ad.

the interviewee is plugging his recent accomplishments (discoveries,
records, collaborations)
(or the writer has loaded goals, Ben Watson's case for 'Jukeing' Derek
Bailey; his forthcoming Bailey biog).

Go figure.
There's still nothing like the Wire towing the confines of commerciality &
complete commercial abandon anywhere in the known universe. Fuckers- Våt.

PS- I found it HIGHLY unlikely that Jim identified the Gunter & Duncan CD
right off the bat.
Needle in a galaxy of hay. Ferarri/Ray Russell maybe.
