Subject: The IDM-less world of Pop Muzik... >> pa Speaking of pop, anyone else out there into the new Spice Girls >> single, Spice up Your Life? It has a great sound, thicker than >> molasses. Yeah! Their best yet, quite possibly. Mega layered, latin/samba drum craziness. Reminded me of 'Come To Daddy' a bit in spirit. Haven't bought their records, because...well, you don't have to really. But it's been the best number one in ages, only to be superceded by that Barbie Girl song! Yes! 'I'm a barbie girl/in a barbie world' 'Being made of plastic/it's fantastic' 'You can comb my hair/undress me everywhere' (?!?!!) 'something something something/life is your creation' A socio-political assessment of how super-lean supermodels and the collogen implant crew are subverting the youth, or just fantasmic euro-pop-pap (bar those 'ooh-woah' bits - that's over egging the mixture just a little too much)? And who is that bloated chump who is supposed to be 'Ken' in the video. Since when was Ken a rugby player. He's supposed to be suave, not a bouncer! Put him in a dinner jacket and that's what you get - "Not tonight mate, not in those trainers". robert merlak said... > I kinda like that Pepsi thing Girlz did. Generation NEXT. > It's really cool. No way! That one with the silence in the ad. Pah, I nearly destroyed my TV trying to whack it into shape. But at least they don't speak. Bubbly spice has a real annoying voice (matches the face/hair'style'). Then again, you ain't seen cheese 'til you've seen the Spice Girls/Gary Lineker/Walkers Crisps one. Plus there's a spice girl on every different crisp flavour - talk about annoying. > I guess it's all about POP anyway. Yeah, roll on the Mel B solo hardcore hip-hop joint. Co' Flow watch out, Mel B come to throw shit down! With Invisibl Skratch Picklz on turntable duties, please... Now for my trump card, my get out of IDM jail free card, AKA the... *IDM get out clause* whereupon I tack a titbit of relevance to the end of this off-topic post, in order to appease some of the less flexable folks on this list... "Photek's remix of Roni Size's 'Brown Paper Bag' is a wicked sparse twisting of the original. So is Nobukazu Takemuras mix (lengthy madness which takes in all forms of jungle - from normal amen stuff to sqrpusher - on a kind of quasi-classical easy listening stylee)." That should do it! Also picked up a compilation of Strata East recordings (who?) called Strata-2-East, which is a compilation of some of their releases from 1972-1975 on a jazz/funk tip. Features lots of unknown (to me) names, but is ace all the same. Looks like I've been missing out. Anyone know what the previous comp is like, or anything else about the artists on here? Oh, and Bjork is on the South Bank Show on Saturday, for those like me who think the LP is wicked (or those who just want to laugh spitefully at the TV). Gb.
