well, there was this cyberculture/technology-in-our-lives type of
documentary called "Synthetic Pleasures" released like a year ago. not
sure where it got played, but i saw it opening night at this small theater
in NYC called Cinema Village - and interestingly enough, the director,
some asian lady, can't remember the name, was there for chit chat. she
mentioned briefly that at the last minute her movie had been knocked from
the schedules of a lot of larger theaters in NYC and she was in danger of
losing even more than she had originally "planned". oh, there was also
something about her sleeping with the guy who financed her movie...her
husband perhaps...ha! sooo, that should provide you with some
insight into the production, reception, and overall politics of
IDM. anyway, i believe the soundtrack got released and was hyped for a
while - i recognised some of the stuff from old astralwerks comps, like
Jaydee (sp?) for example. there are some extremely funny moments in the
movie, like the japanese toys, and some awe-inspiring as well - indoor
downhill skiing (also in Japan, of course). the message got muddled
and confusing after a while, but it was nice that semi-IDMish music got
played in the background for about 90% of the movie. so, go see it, if
possible...it even has a cameo from one of my philosophy professors as
well...
