digging tha krates wit da multdawg....

Philus: Tetra CD(Sahko 15)
Our fine Finnish friend, Mika Vanio's "medical project" [don't
ask me what that means, though i cooould take a guess]. The source
appears to be all sine tones, manipulated and arranged in repeative
patterns. The beats are scarce. And i will admit, the sounds are
cool/experimental/nice/ambient/whatever. Unfortunately, like just about
all of Mika's work, it's not for those with short attention spans. There
is no expansion to that original cool sound. Basically Just a loop.
After a first hint of listening and acknowledging the uniqueness of the
sounds and concepts, one might find him or herself wandering off into the
other room to find something to entertain themselves. The most enjoyable
track is, by far, "Tele", with it's 'morse code' sequences and squelchy
taps. And it is one of the only ones you will remember. The album is
all experiments and no substance. Rather than putting such a large
amount of material out in such a short time, i'd be interested in seeing
Mika put more effort in musical development, as opposed to blind
experimentation. I suggest putting _Tetra_ in your background listening
bin.

Lesser: Gigolo Cop CD(Vinyl Communications VC115)
What is this? Well, in a word, fucking excellent (well, that's
two words, but you get the idea). The digital-error melody opener,
"Influence of the barbarian invasions" grabbed my attention, before being
sucked in further by the dark industrial electro ambient... huh?
exactly. It's like everything that electronic music has been and ever
will be thrown into a pot. Yes, there's noise, but it is a melodic sort
of noise. "Mandriod '77" is a distressed hip hop workout with sharp
bursts of smooth noises and i won't spoil the surprise of the 'vocals'.
Followed by the piercingly beautiful siren melody of "Cyclical Flu
Epidemic". Harsh breaks are the style on "One Ambient Motherfucker" [not
very ambient, eh?] The breaks then randomly decompose, in and out of a
high pitched tone. And so on... Before closing with the 13 minute live
ambienoise epic, "fuck w/ me", although i wouldn't recommend fucking with
Lesser, an artist who should be hitting 'the big time' (at least, in idm
terms) with his contribution to the upcoming _altered states of america_
comp. on lo recordings. More like 'greater', eh?

np: Mix Master Mike: musik's worst nightmare (down to earth)... that was
the one i was talking about!
