Herbie Hancock - Old Record (Verve Japan)

This didn't come out in 1998, because Herbie Hancock died in the 1940s,
though he kept playing to beat the band (who deserved it) until well into
the late 1950s.

One immediately notices the large format packaging, a 12-inch square with
a grainy photo on the front and lots of small writing on the back with a
signature under it, written by some guy who works at the label, listing
all 680 permutations of the 15 surviving jazz musicians, who formed all
possible quartets and quintets between 1950 and 1960 and recorded one
album each, also listed.

The beats are reminiscent of acid jazz, as if Herbie had sampled acid
jazz loops off CDs and then programmed a patch imitating those stupid,
oversized standing violins you see on black and white TV programs.
The piano synth is especially annoying. Sounds like he's making it up as
he goes along, like Lisa Carbon on two hours' sleep. Nice try. No Black
Dog remixes, either. 0/10

Thanks to my grandpa for letting me borrow his Technics 1200SL Victrola.
I could have sworn the last remaining "turntable" (as they were called)
had its stylus twisted off by a headphoned hunchback trying to play
records backwards circa 1993. Just shows how wrong you can be.
