Though this thread is getting old i have to add my own opinion. I'm only
16 years old, and I've been listening to IDM music for more or less 2
years, though i wasn't even aware of the term IDM up until maybe 8
months ago. I think there are a lot of people that listen to autechre,
µ-ziq, and some of the more "mainstream" artists if you can call it
that, that have no knowledge of idm. My knowledge of electro artists
was incredibly stumped before i became aware of idm and its mailings
lists. This is obviously, thanks to my computer, and hotline for
downloading mp3s from servers. Even now, i still don't know who most of
the artists are that are spoken of here, though i still enjoy reading
the threads. But my point is, yes there are i'm sure a lot of people
that listen to some of the stuff idm'ers listen to, though their library
will definitely include things not associated with idm at all. for
example 1 year ago, this is what i was usually listening to, which has
changed very much over the last few months:

Autechre
Mouse on Mars
Juno Reactor
Underworld
µ-Ziq
Carl Craig
System 7
Scala
Massive Attack
Stereolab
Laika
Kraftwerk
MBM
Komputer
(I'm sure there's more, but this was a long time ago)...

I'm not really sure how many of these artists anyone recognizes, but i'm
sure you get the point.

And that's my two cents.
Btw: how old are most typical idm'ers on this list anyhow? I know i'm
pretty young, being 16.
