I've not heard the track, but it's a very common practice for artists to build a track around a sample, but when it turns out to be un-clearable or too expensive, they just re-record the loop. Somewhere at home I have a DAT bootlegged from a Seattle studio that's chock full of loops that were recorded from scratch, and then treated so that they sound as though they were nicked from old records.
