California Concert (classic early 70's jazz record) My dad used to listen to this constantly when I was 4 or 5 years old, and it sank in and _did things to me_. Mothership Connection/The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein - Parliament The first albums I ever bought with my own money (I was about 8 or 9) This is where I learned that music could (and should) be really wigged out. And funky. The B-52's (debut) / Wild Planet - the B-52's More confirmation on the wigged front, the first "rock" purchase for a young black child from the suburbs of Detroit. Computer World - Kraftwerk "Cars" - Gary Numan This is when I fully fell in love with electronics in music. "Cosmic Cars" - Cybotron It blew my mind that kids in Detroit were making music this far out. Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise - Art of Noise This Is Big Audio Dynamite - Big Audio Dynamite Oil & Gold - Shriekback My intro to the wonders of digital sampling. Glider EP / Tremelo EP - My Bloody Valentine A whole new way of looking at sound. Knocked me for a loop. Ninety - 808 State My first full-length techno LP, and still holds up. The Sinking Of the Titanic - Gavin Bryars Ambience from an entirely different perspective, taught me to look for wonderful things from unexpected places. -d.w.
