Although the ms-20m is smd, it is actually pretty easy to work on bc there is a lot of room in there. Some pads are left open for adding stuff like vco1 mod input. I was able to add independent cv for both oscillators, disconnect the eg from the vca and some of the usual mods. I like it a lot for the sound and the form factor, but I've never used an old ms-20 so I can't say how close it is.
