OK, a couple of other folks have been doing it with little public outcry,
so I figured I'd test the waters meself and post a playlist from my radio
show. This is from last week's installment (I'm taking this week off to go
see some heroes from my youth, The Cramps...). Mini-reviews for a few of
the things I played appear at the end. Comments welcome.

                                MINI-REVIEWS

Mental Blox - Machine 12" (Spinyl)
After a couple of hot platters earlier this year, Metal Blox (aka Matt
Haines) returns with some more of his funky-ass booty-shakin' electro
grooviness. While Haines' own versions of the track are sweet on their own,
it's the cold-funk minimalism of the Atom Heart remix that really rocks my
                                   world.

James Hardway - Welcome to the Neon Lounge CD (Recordings of Substance)
The king of jazzy drum'n'bass returns with another sleazy epic. As the
title suggests, there's a little loungecore around the edges, but as with
last year's Deeper, Wider, Smoother, Shit, the star attraction is the
brilliant melding of live sax riffs and deep double bass with frantic
                      breakbeat action. Swank-o-rama!

                        Scorn - Whine CD (Invisible)
The final Scorn document comes in the form of a live recording from earlier
this year in which Mick Harris' patented dark-hop breakbeats are enhanced
by ambient guitar treatments by Eraldo Bernocchi. An appendix of four
studio tracks originally intended for a scuttled collaboration with Bill
Laswell and rapper Khalil are evidence that while the name is being
retired, the Scorn sound will most likely continue in Harris' other work.

Various Artists - Untitled (ten)/Untitled (mix) 2xCD (Extreme)
Influential Aussie experimental label Extreme celebrates their first decade
with a collection of new tracks from a dectet of artists. All facets of the
Extreme experience are represented, from the edgy neo-dub of Pablo's Eye,
to the moody ambience of Social Interiors and Skuli Sverrisson, to the
full-on noise assault of Merzbow. Social Interiors also appear on the bonus
disc where they plunder the Extreme back-catalogue to create intriguing
                                cut-up works.

Biosphere - Substrata CD (All Saints/Thirsty Ear)
An hour of cold ambient bliss from Norway's Geir Jenssen. The aural
equivalent of his northern homeland, it's brooding beauty will have you
pining for the fjords in no time. Be sure to keep an ear open for the Twin
                              Peaks samples...
