MARKANT RANT. > >the whole markant thing is making me furious. >about 250 copies" now, somebody enlighten me about why markant needs a >picture disc limited to 250? i mean what is the point to releasing only 500 >copies worldwide of every 12" you put out? Yeah agreed completely. I have a problem with labels who deliberately limit what they release continually - if the label doesn't have much cash and can only press a few copies, then thats understandable. Warp and other labels are different IMO in that they don't revolve solely around limited releases - they do it now and again as a 'sweetner', something that if you're a Warp fan, you're going to appreciate a lot more. And remember that they've done a good job in doing the opposite and making rarer music more accessable (Black Dog, Squarepusher, etc.), espcially in the CD market. The limited nature of a lot of IDM labels (V/Vm, Markant, the Mask series, etc.) is bad I think for the IDM 'scene' because it's going to become intractable and anal as a genre, appealing only to those rich enough and anal enough to be able to buy imports - thats liable to stagnate. Its also to the detriment of the label as well as the musical genre because these limited records are then sold on at much higher costs which the label and the artist never sees. If theres a demand for a record/label/artist and the label can afford to press up to the demand, it doesn't make any sense not to. The fans are happy cos they can get a copy they don't have to pay over the odds to get, the artist is happy as she gets more royalties and the label is happy because it gets more money to do the next record. Actually, let me modify my comments a bit - I don't actually have a problem with a particular label doing continued limited releases but when the whole genre starts moving in that direction because of the kudos associated with limited releases, I think thats bad. >and don't flame me saying how >that's only how many he would sell, Yeah, he could probably shift a 1000 if he spaced out his releases a lot more. And remember the more you press (and hopefully, sell), the more return you get back on each record sold as each unit cost for the 12" (and sleeve etc.) is much less. I use MPO and financially (as long as you can sell the records of course!) it makes much more sense to press 1000 copies than it does to press 500. Of course, if you're a new label without much cash, thats a moot point. Markant ain't though - those silver sleeves cost a bit more than standard black disco bags. And picture discs cost a lot more than standard normal-thickness black vinyl. >my only point was that i think the whole limited thing has gotten to alot of >the labels' heads, AND the artists. Yep. Its become IDMs' USP. || [CiM] || xxx_@xxxxxxx.xxx || - ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
