Zbigniew Karkowski press from Hecker's most recent release on OR: Where is this non-place? This perplexing disc of digital audio fold back the unease of isolationanism to a micro level in the computer environment. Tiny sounds of data-crunching, internal machinations and ports clicking open blow up into alien landscapes. The third in OR's 'made to order' series of CD-R releases sees Florian Hecker piece together a radical, barren aesthetic through the PC and synthesis software. Recorded so quietly that at times it's barely audible, the album demands absolute undivided attention. Your ears soon adjust to the strangeness, focusing in on a wealth of miniature detail as the soundworld around you expands. Taut and self-contained, seven untitled tracks pivot around the axis of the 24 minute fourth track. Ultra-faint drones are overwritten by choppy strings of zeroes and ones and munching insect noise. Fuzzbacks flare up over high-pitched squeals.
