perhaps i missed it but i havn't seen much talk about monolake latest effort gobi.the desert ep. first of all, i was think this past weekend that i wish monolake who release a new. i've enjoyed interstate throughly. well, surprise surprise in my weekly fix from my pusher (aka pj) here's the new monolake that i forgot i'd order (damn that short term memory.) monday was a good day for music. in the package from pj was also the new mika vaino which i won't review yet as i've only had a couple listen of it and at work at that. from what i did hear, my impression is that it doesn't beat you over the head like much of pan sonic work can. more easy listening, if that could accually apply to their music. also recieved the tomas jirku 'immaterial.' recommended. along the bc/cr line but not quite so washy as a lot in that vien. well define and thoughtfully conceived. that brings me back to monolake. the desert ep is quite an applicible title. however, to me it is less of the rolling dunes of the sahara as the cover art implies but the desert of the southwest or northwest (yes we have deserts up here) or perhaps more mid-southern africa at dusk. the steady clicks of crickets in the wind, the rustling of animals as the emerge from the shade in search of water and food. yes, this is a very tranqual record, but never in a sugar sweet way. if ambient's goal is to take you to a place, then monolake succeed's wonderfully in tranporting one to quiet night with nary a human in sight. beautfully record. a must. ben.
