Picked up Chimchim's _To Have a Christmas Tree With Satan on Top_ several
months ago and it continues to grow on me. I really liked T & J 001
(Zooid's _Sleep Theory_) and now with this (T & J 004) they definitely
have my interest. _To Have ..._ is all over the place. The two
highlights of the disk make it all worthwhile - with "Shes the Dragon"
there is a brilliant, but too short, ditty that is melancholy but sweet.
The rhythm is an understated twisting mess (but in a very good way) that
would be killer cranked up in the mix. Even better is "Often I Zonk"
which wouldn't be out of place at all on a Reinforced release, or for a
more specific comparison, belongs in the Future Loop Foundation ilk .
The song mutates and flexes back and forth in a completely jelled state.
It just sounds good. "n.d.n.j. 1" shows chimchim's sense of humor, and
several of the other tracks showcase chimchim's ability to place
smart-assed samples in just the right place (to fantastic effect on
"enter them chimchim"). If every $3 I spent was this good, I'd lose
interest in sex.
