Location: Hollywood Athletic Club So, Kid Koala went off! He ended up doing an impromptu 2x4 with Cut Chemist, and both those guys rule. Kid Koala started off with a lot of beat juggling and the only way you could tell he was doing it was by watching him becuase it sounded perfect. Great orchestrated turtablist shit! My one complaint was Kid Koala's set was only 30 mins! How much does it cost to book this guy? They had him fly down from Canada for a 30 min set? Oh well, he spun a little with Money Mark too. Onto Money Mark... I'd never heard any of his stuff before so I didn't know exactly what to expect. (Actually I was _expecting_ Asian Dub Foundation to come on when he did as per the schedule I saw but they didn't play) I liked some of his more experimental electronic stuff, but the mainstream alternative stuff was kind of boring. He began his set by coming through the audiance onto the stage with this quasi-FisherPrice boombox thingy, which was playing a beat, and then proceeded to use microphone feedback from a mike that was also attached to the boombox to play a melody. I thought that was pretty creative. Then he played a kind of jazz influenced electronic song with Kid Koala scratching along which was quite good, and obviously completly unsequenced as he was playing the bass line with his feet. He also played a trumpet with a ballon while Kid Koala dropped beats which was pretty cool. Other than that his stuff sounded pretty mainstream alternative to me, but what do I know about mainstream alternative... BTW I thought the Hollywood Athletic Club was a pretty nice place (1st time there). The sound in the main room kicked ass, I was pretty suprised for a club. They had speaker stacked 3 rows high on either side of the stage. My biggest complaint was the no smoking thing, but with the amount of people that ended up in there by the end of the night I guess it probably wasn't a bad idea as the place would've been _filled_ with smoke.
