sorry if somebody has already mentioned it (i'm a few days behind on my IDM digests) but i'd recommend _sternklang_. i checked this record out from the university library a few times when i was in school. my memory is a little hazy, but the pieces were composed for and recorded in a large park. stockhausen had several groups of musicians set up in this big park, with each group barely within hearing range of the other groups. the idea being that listeners could walk around and experience different sounds from all directions, interfering with each other in a cool way. of course, the vinyl fails to deliver this effect, but the music is nevertheless strange and enjoyable. the pictures on the gatefold sleeve help to convey at least some of the intended effect. i'd be interested to know if this record is available anywhere. i'd pay a healthy sum to own the original, or perhaps even a reissue. as for _kontakte_, i recommend seeking out the wergo reissue of the original release (recorded in 1960, and on which karlheinz stockhausen actually played) and avoid recordings of any other more recent performances. matt np: lilienthal - castor&pollux
