we drove an hour down to see tortoise at this small, small venue, held in "the old gym" at Bard college. The deal is , i review oval, and mc gets to review tortoise since we got to hang out with his idols. ill leave him to tell that story. anyway, markus popp came out and played about a 40 minute set with a big screen in the back projecting distorted, blurred images. He made no facial expressions at all and was very concentrated on his computers. He stayed motionless, admist the rants of assholes, saying, "hey dude, your cd is skipping" the kids there were asking for trouble, even having the audacity to get up on stage and sit down while Popp was performing. The feel of the music was great, with a kind of cylobian edge to some of the tracks. After his set, i got to shake his hand, and tell him how much i enjoyed his set. He said thank you and i even got him to crack a grin. and then tortoise....... well, ill let matt do the honors. hate, phil
