nice short takes on some new ones... amp ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 14:17:22 +0100 From: "R.W.Webb" <xxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxx.xx.xx> To: xxx@xxxxxxxxx.xxx Subject: (313) some newish records i've been to the record store. i've bought some records. here are some thoughts. Reflection "Remixed" (12", Clear, UK) 'Cube Loop' - Morgan Geist mix. mix has typical warm mg feel to it, is midtempo, flow's real nice and kinda swings rather than slams (?). i like what mg's done with the percussion. i like this a lot. 'Lost Tapes in African Loops' - As One mix. now this is jazz. it's like jazz with electronics providing some of the sounds rather than electronic music done in a jazz style, if you get my drift. Titonton Duvante and Morgan Geist "Titonton and Morgan EP" (12", Phono, UK) 4 tracks, 'Frebis', 'Cusp', 'Overcast', 'Febis' Morgan's mix. as with pretty much anything with mg's pawprints all over it it is chock full of electronic stabs and progressions, and sweeping soundscapes. it's 4/4 tempo, but there's no 4 to the floor action going on here - far too much thought for that. nice collaboration - more to come? btw, this is (straight from the horse's mouth) the mythical ENV003 in it's only full release, thus far. Lisa Stansfield "The Line" Ian O'Brien mixes (12" orange label promo, Arista, UK) 'Desert Funk mix' - downtempo, full vocal, guitar led techno jazz funk thingy. sounds like a chaotic jam session. Ian's stuff can be a bit noodling at times, and this is no exception. i still like it though. 'Benfleet 3.30 mix' - this is quite soothing for some reason and kinda shuffles along at it's own pace with odd snatches of vocal wails and oooos. it's got that bouncy Basic Channel noise throughout. he still can't resist the synthy noodle though. you'd be a brave man to drop either of these two. none (313): Source Direct "Capital D/Enemy Lines" (12", Science, UK) jesus. talk about claustrophobic atmospherics. this is some serious nightmare they're recreating. the breaks, however, on 'Capital D' are real lazy. 'Enemy Lines' has a bit more imagination on this score with quite a typical SD disjointed break. love the moods, but more thought into the breaks next time please. beginning to slip behind the lead of Photek. DJ Shadow "High Noon" (12", Mo'Wax, UK) 3 tracks, 'High Noon', 'Devil's Advocate - Heaven v. Hell Bonus Beat', 'Organ Donor - Extended Overhaul'. what can you say? so,so imaginative. i don't care much for most 'big beat', but i can always make time for DJ Shadow. i think Muzik will have to invent a new category - Spaghetti Western Breaks. Nuyorican Soul "I am the Black Gold of the Sun" 4 Hero mix (12", Talkin' Loud, UK) this mix is superb. the warmth that it radiates is, well, almost tangible. play this all the way thru, then again, and again... smile. what problems? your life will be better for buying this i promise you. enough. sorry for excessive bandwidth, non-313 content, non-specific descriptions, early mg leanings (just be grateful i haven't snagged the Clear 12" yet). rob "The illusion of freewill: The People are witness to the terminal wickedness"
