for what it's worth, anytime an IDMer asks me what derrick may tracks to check out, i always refer them to the "kao-tic harmony / icon" 12" on transmat: bleeps, pitchbending, ambient washes. probably mayday's least housey and most experimental moment. (especially "icon" -and i'm not talking about the terrible edited version on the innovator comp) i've always thought that this record never got it's due - it would certainly fit right in with AI era Warp stuff. so, uh... check it out.

My point was that the term IDM came about, in my opinion, because of the
popularity of commercial dance trash, sort of like a campaign. Before the
commercial trash thing happened, which I would say was around 91-92, there
was no need for the term "intelligent", because it was all underground and
all very intelligent anyway. Derrick May, along with everyone else during
techno's birth, fall into that bracket. Their music was techno then and
still is now.
