out now are emoticon's ninth and tenth releases, from jeff samuel and
connective zone. quite different in style, jeff's ep focuses on deep
downtempo electronics while the connective zone boys do the string-fuelled
detroit thing in their usual high-quality fashion. they're available in all
the usual outlets now - and you can check the tracks for yourself using the
links below. remember our <http://www.emoticonrecordings.com/>website has
full details of all releases up to emot 010, including realaudio versions
of every track, and screensavers for each release.

we'll be taking a summer break in july and august, but confirmed for later
this year are the following...
emot 011 ::: russ gabriel ::: flip down to break ::: 3-track 12" :::
sept/oct 2002
emot 012 ::: klash productions ::: scopex ::: 2-track 12" ::: sept/oct 2002

also in september, emoticon's big brother label, headspace, will be
starting up again, as an outlet for more club-oriented house and techno
material. the first new release will be a split ep from tom churchill and
dennis desantis, and full info/audio will soon be online at the headspace
<http://www.headspacerecordings.com/>website. for more info on any of these
releases please get in touch.

in other news, emoticon's tom churchill has been contributing record
reviews for our friends at twoplayer - check them out at
<http://www.twoplayer.net/>www.twoplayer.net. this newsletter will return
in september - have a good summer!=20

following his contribution to emoticon's third sampler ep earlier this
year, jeff samuel, based in ohio, usa, delivers a four-track solo ep of
high quality downtempo electronics. already picking up a good reputation
worldwide thanks to his superb techno/house releases on labels such as 7th
city, lo-fi stereo and deep night essentials, the 'new age mold' ep sees
jeff drop the bpms in favour of a more experimental sound. call it what you
want (and we're currently favouring the term 'click-hop' at the emoticon
hq!) - but the tracks here defy easy categorisation, with their crisp,
metallic, hip-hop infused beats and delicate, intricate strands of melody.
expertly put together, and a conscious departure from much of today's
hyper-edited, soulless and ultimately disposable idm, the 'new age mold' ep
demands a close listen - we hope you enjoy it.

emot 010 ::: connective zone ::: qwerty ::: 4-track 12" ::: out now

connective zone, aka lincoln-based duo graham sims and simon button, have
been making their unique brand of deep techno for many years, for labels
including the now-defunct a13, and, more recently, the pure plastic
offshoot uxb. emoticon featured 'hubpie' on the third sampler ep earlier
this year, and now we follow it up with a full ep. warm strings, thick
chords, multi-layered synth melodies and crisp beats are the order of the
day, with influences coming from early detroit techno and 'artificial
intelligence' era uk electronics. all four tracks pack a soulful punch,
drawing from the past but allowing their individual sound to shine through.
rhythmically they range from straight-up 4/4 beats to more syncopated
patterns, and are sure to find favour with more adventurous djs as well as
home listeners.=20
